About Jessica Schmoll

What Is Imposter Syndrome?

Imposter syndrome is a subjective psychological experience of the self as a “fraud,” or “phony,” full of self-doubt, despite the success that you have achieved in various areas of your life. These thoughts and feelings can be especially pronounced within the world of work. If you find yourself using negative self-talk routinely and experience stress or anxiety, feelings of burnout, fatigue, or even depression related to this self-perception, imposter syndrome may be present. Additionally, if you engage in perfectionistic thinking and social comparison, imposter syndrome may emerge.

Imposter syndrome is not a diagnosable mental health disorder per se, but it is an all-too-common phenomenon which can be emotionally troubling and can lead to more serious mental health conditions.

You are not alone. Therapy can help!
